Have you ever taken some time to ask yourself what really makes Portugal the ultimate golf destination for a lot of enthusiasts?

4 Simple Things You Can Do To Stop The Reverse Pivot

While professional golfers shift the weight of their body to their back leg when they do a back swing, amateurs shift only half of the body weight at the height of their swing. While these players realise that they are doing the reverse pivot, they do not however know the right way to cure it.

To speak the truth, getting rid of the reverse pivot is not an easy task. You may spend hours and hours of practice and plenty of money on the best equipment but find it difficult to get rid of.

For becoming a consistent player, you need to know how well your pivot is. You reverse pivot when your back leg is held straight and the weight is shifted to your front leg, when you are at your swing’s top. The head of the club moves towards target while on back swing and lowers down.

The right leg straightens while the left leg is bent more. When you are on the top of your back swing, the left knee is pointing to the ball’s left side, instead of to the ball’s right side.

The weight of your body ends on right leg on follow through with the sole planted strongly on ground. You feel pain in your lower back, when the swing ends due to your spine rocking forward and back instead of your body turning round it. So, here are some tips to correct this.

  1. One main reason for reverse pivot or weight shift done in reverse is the weakness of thigh and hip muscles of the back leg, especially gluteus maximus and quadriceps muscles. Make sure your back leg is able to sustain nearly 90% of body weight, when you back swing.
  2. In case a player has weak hamstrings, buttocks or hip flexors, he will try to lock his knee in an effort to straighten his back leg. This will cause the shift of his weight towards his front leg for better balance.
  3. Strengthening the core muscles and that of the legs and hips helps to compensate and get the right balance, so you are cured of the reverse pivot.
  4. Useful drill. With your fingers in left hand, lift the club’s butt, so it rests on the sternum under the chin and let the club hang down straight with its toe pointing towards the ball. The shaft of the club is in line with your spine now. Make the usual backswing by taking right hand to your back, until the fingers are facing skywards.

With the right pivot, your left hand fingers should point downwards to the ball. If not, the improper tilt will force the head of the club to move right, passing the right knee. To cure this, make sure the club does not move much towards the right.
