Driving Golf Instructions From The Most Experienced Players

Special problems

Experienced golfers don't face the same problems with their driving as beginners do. Better players usually hook the ball while most amateurs slice the ball. New players need more power in their drives while experienced players are trying to throttle back. This article is specific for experienced players who want to improve their game from the tee.

The irony of golf

In golf, the more you try to steer the ball, the more crooked you will hit it. This is very counter intuitive because in most other area of life, the more careful we are, the better the result. When hitting drives in golf however, the more you rip it, the straighter the ball will go. Experienced players need to focus on swinging freely and letting go of the outcome.

Curve the ball (intentionally)

Learn to work the ball both ways so you can play all types of holes. You will be able to keep the ball away from the trouble by curving it away from the water and sand. Not only that, shaping the ball to fit the hole will keep your drives on the fairway and avoid running into the rough.

Driving downwind

If you are playing downwind, hit a three wood because it will travel further than a driver. A 3-wood will go higher in the air and the wind will blow it further, while a driver will go lower and won't get as much wind behind it.

Driving in to the wind

To hit good drives into a head wind, learn to hit a "knock down" driver shot that keeps the ball low. This will keep the ball straight and you won't lose as much distance.

Pick your battles

Recognize the holes where you can give the ball a lash in order to get a shorter second shot. These are the holes where you won't be punished for a wayward drive. There will be other holes, however, where you need to throttle back and be in the fairway.

Avoid fairway bunkers

Always drive either past the bunkers or short of them. Never drive so that you are level with the bunkers because then you bring the sand into the play on both sides. If there are fairway bunkers, always make sure that you can either fly over them easily. If you can't, lay back and make sure your drives land short of them.
