Golf Instruction Putting Short Putts Drills: A Tutorial By A Professional

A 3-foot putt counts as much as a 300-yard drive. If you can’t convert when you hit it close, your scores are never going to improve dramatically. Many people struggle with short putts, but there are a number of drills that will help you make more of them.

Forget about path, worry about your putter face alignment

So many people worry about the path of their putter. However at a very close distance, your face staying aligned is much more important than your path. To ensure you maintain a square putter face through impact, perform the following drills.

Putt on the meter stick

A metal meter stick is a great tool for working on your short putts. In order to work on keeping your clubface square, do the following:

  1. Place your meter stick on a flat part of the practice green or surface in your home.

  2. Place the ball at rest in the hole on one end.

  3. Keep your putter face perpendicular to the meter stick as you make your stroke.

If you do this properly, your ball will travel the entire distance of the meter stick. Any mishit will result in the ball falling off to either side before reaching the end.

Putt between the train tracks

If you don’t have a meter stick, you can alternatively lay down two golf clubs or alignment sticks on either side of your putter face. Perform the drill in the same fashion, but you’ll want to keep your face perpendicular to both of the rails. The ball should roll through the middle, equal distance from both clubs.

Putt like a pendulum

You may have heard many people tell you to accelerate through your putts, but this causes more problems and inconsistencies for many golfers. It’s best to let your putter do the work as you create a backswing and follow through of equal distances. To practice a pendulum motion, do the following:

  1. Place three coins or tees on the ground with equal space between them.

  2. Setup to the middle coin like you are going to make a putt.

  3. Take your putter back to the one coin and forward to the other in a smooth, continuous stroke.

  4. Once you make a stroke of equal length and speed, place a ball next to a middle coin to hit your practice putt.

To hit shorter putts, make the distance between the outer coins smaller. For longer putts, do the opposite.
