A person’s body language and posture signals his mood and confidence. Just like that, a player’s body posture can signal his readiness to play a good golf stroke. Body posture is important because it’s one of the elements that has a huge influence on the power and direction of a swing. In golf, players don’t just swing with their hands; the whole body is involved. Without a good posture, it’s impossible to execute a decent shot.
When you swing the club, two areas of the spine play a crucial role – the mid-back region (Thoracic Vertebra) and the lower back region (Lumbar Spine). During the swing, the thoracic vertebra region rotates and facilitates the shot, while the lumbar spine stays more or less in the same position. Keep in mind that the lumbar spine is not capable of rotating more than a couple of degrees.
Golfers with bad posture bend over while attempting a golf shot. Their body posture locks the thoracic vertebra and prevents it from rotating. This also puts excessive pressure on the lumbar spine. With a locked thoracic vertebra, players will find it impossible to generate the required power to execute a good golf shot.
A bad posture isn’t something you develop overnight. It’s more of an off-the-course thing; a thing of practice. The posture you have when performing daily activities like walking, sitting, standing, etc. can affect the golf posture on the course. The first suggestion that any expert can offer is to maintain a good posture while performing the day to day activities.
To develop a perfect posture is to keep the spine in a neutral position; this is called the Spinal Neutral. Players exert the least amount of stress on the joints and vertebra when the spine is in the neutral position. Here is a simple drill to find your spinal neutral.
Spinal neutral in the standing position can be achieved by a simple pelvic tilt drill. In a standing position place the hands on the hips. Now, simultaneously stick the stomach and butt out, and also move the hips forward as much as you can. After that, move the hips back as much as you can. Finally, to get into the neutral position move the hips forward slightly, just 10 percent forward.
Achieving the neutral in a sitting position is simple. Sit in a chair and assume your normal posture. Begin the drill by assuming an upright posture. This isn’t the ideal posture; you won’t be very comfortable sitting in a very upright position. So, from the upright position, relax a bit, backing off 10 percent will do the trick. Now, you’re in the neutral position and will feel much more comfortable.
Practice these two drills to maintain the ideal body posture on and off the course.
Those who are adventurous area also able to take some time after their golfing exploits, to enjoy some of the country’s deep sea fishing expeditions, among a host of other water sporting activities that line the sea shore. Truly Portugal is paradise not just for the avid golfer, but it is one place where anyone would be happy to visit at any time of the year.
