The Easiest Way To Make Banana Ball A Thing Of The Past

The banana ball is the slang term used for a sliced shot where the ball curves from the left to right (in case of right-handed golfers). The ball when sliced takes a more curved, crescent shaped path that resembles a banana, hence the name. Experts pin the blame for a slice on two errors that cause the ball side spin and curve in the air. You might be hitting the banana ball because of faulty club face or an erroneous swing path where the club takes an outside-in path.

Correct the club face problem

To prevent the club face from opening up at the point of impact with the ball, golfers need to use a strong grip. By holding the club tightly you could keep the club face closed and prevent it from opening up at the last moment. Keep in mind not to grip it too tight so as to affect the stroke.

Assume the normal stance and position the club in front of your body. Keep the toe pointed towards the 12 o’clock position. Now, from this position slowly turn the club, so that the toe is now pointing towards the 11 o’clock position. Observe your current posture – the hands and grip – and use the same when playing the golf shot.

Stopping the outside-in swing path

If an erroneous swing path is the cause of the banana ball, then PGA pro and golf expert Rick Smith has an excellent drill that would solve this problem. Take your normal stance and assume that an imaginary line is running between the feet, right in the middle. To mark the imaginary line, place a club or straight stick along the line. The stick must be some 5 yards to the right of your trailing foot. Now, play the golf shot keeping an eye on the stick. Ensure that your backswing starts outside the stick and on the downswing it moves inside the stick.

Preventing a common error

Sometimes, golfers who tend to hit the ball to the right of the target, with the goal of correcting the fault, aim too much to the left and overcompensate. They might be technically strong in other aspects of a golf stroke, but a slight mistake like this can produce a banana ball. You can easily correct this fault either by keenly observing your stroke or you can ask your golf buddy to keep an eye on the alignment.
